How can the Aurora County District Attorney build a case against media figures for the deaths and injuries of victims of the recent theatre shooting? Essentially, television news producers, directors and announcers, as well as advertisers, must be held criminally liable for knowingly culturally depriving and dumbing down the American public, assuming that this led to a greater likelihood of wackos including Jim Holmes acting out their fantasies in violent ways, something that rarely occurs outside of America.
The first question then from a legal standpoint is why do TV executives allow what is essentially junior high school level nonsense as promotional advertising and substantive content on news programming? Is there a nexus between irresponsible television content and violent acts by deranged individuals causing casualties? Any psychologist worth his salt can verify that if people are exposed to this kind of nonsense over a long period of time, some of them who are emotionally unstable will be more likely to commit random acts of violence. America is the only country where dumbing down through television shows is part of social conditioning. Obviously, television producers want a dependent, compliant public both to control people and to exploit them economically by selling them products and services. This then is their motive for airing repetitive, stupid, ridiculous television content.
The second question is whether the communications media bosses and direct participants actually know that what they are doing causes substantial harm to others, or are acting in reckless disregard of the consequences of their programming on the public at large? This is more of a factual question and will have to be determined by a jury. Given the arrogance of those currently in the limelight, there is no question in my mind that they are aware of the harm they are causing to other people, acting as accessories to murder and other crimes.
